The annual State Fair is here and I, like everyone else living around this area, attended the festivities and took some photos.
This is the first year that I was able to attend for free.
Yes! FREE!!
You know why?
Well when you get old, like me, the State decides it's only fair to allow oldies in for free, at least for one day.
That day was last Monday.
While there were some you'uns around, majority of the attendies were long in the tooth.😉
The State Fair unofficial icon is the Butter Cow.
"Sculptor Sarah Pratt spent 90 hours over five days crafting the cow. The unsalted spectacle, first whipped up in 1922, has been a part of the state fair for a century. Pratt found inspiration for this year’s iteration while sitting between her chicken coop and pasture, thinking about the plants in her garden and the way we connect with the earth. In her sculpture, a nod to the fair’s “Grow with us” theme, a farmer tends to plants as a mischievous Jersey cow stands behind him.The silky, glistening cow weighs between 650 and 700 pounds, and the farmer, adds another hundred"

What fun! Please tell me you had a funnel cake and a deep fried Reese's Cup! 😋
ReplyDeleteThe story is (according to one of the guys in our group) that at one time there were two funnel cake stands at the fair, both dating back centuries 😉. Now only one stands, in the same location it's been forever and yours truly did not have any. What I did have, which was quite unique, was a buffalo chicken horseshoe (Spingfield is famous for horseshoes) wrapped in a tortilla, fried. Absolutely delicious, but could not finish it.....so big!
DeleteLove the photos! Especially photo of the people. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping in, Anonymous 😉😁
DeleteI absolutely love everything about this set. It's your best one of this type where you wander around a busy place or event. The photos themselves are obviously technically excellent but the subjects are such a great mix too, showing all aspects. What really comes across despite the contemporary clothes is a timeless American quality. I immediately thought of American Graffiti. There is something old fashioned, in a good way, a reassuring way, a comforting way. It's great to see this event is still going and I hope it carries on. I had read about the butter cow before somewhere, very surreal.
ReplyDeleteYour last comment says it all. " There is something old fashioned....." I believe that is why we all still attend the fair, eventhough it is identical ( kiosks, shows, rides...) to the previous year and the year before that. Feels "reassuring and comforting" amist all the other happenings in our world.
