The Southwest Chief runs Superliner train sets. Trains typically consist of two P40 or P42 locomotives, a baggage car, three or four sleeper cars, a dining car, sightseer lounge and three coach cars.
Two Amtrak trains run this route on a daily basis with one starting off early in the morning and the second one in the late afternoon.
We chose the late afternoon schedule because it gave us the opportunity to be in "daylight" when traversing some of the more scenic areas of the country.
The full length of the Amtrak Southwest Chief route, from Chicago to Los Angeles, is approximately 2,265 miles (3,645 km) and the average journey time is around 43 hours with 31 intermediate stops being made, as indicated in the previous post, along the way.
We took the afternoon train from Chicago and arrived Los Angeles two days later, early in the morning. But since Los Angeles was not our final destination, we had to wait for our connection, the Pacific Surfliner, in order to continue with our trip.
Naturally, I had to take a few photos of the train station while waiting for our connection.
